Robert Parker, 90p
The Montalbera 2018 Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato Laccento offers an interesting combination of licorice, zesty fruit, red currant and balsam herb. This is a distinctive wine that veers from savory aromas to some sweet tones of candied almond and dried apricot. I could see this wine pairing with a delightful North African tajine in which meat is stewed with either preserved lemon or prunes. On the close, the wine is lean and crisp.
Luca Maroni, 99p
It is rare to find wines with this substantial structure, these majestic tannins and, at the same time, a such profound and intense floral vividness. One of the miracles of the Italian nature for its aromatic intensity and charming floral expression coming from its blackberry composition. Explosion of fruits and violet reinforced by mint spices that temper and refresh the palate. Blackberry pulp lights up the mouth. This vintage is characterized by a really good level of acidity. It is rare to find wines with this substantial structure, these majestic tannins and, at the same time, a such profound and intense floral vividness, totally unoxidized. One of the most balanced and consistent red wines of the year. Chapeau.
